Mary Gauthier & Ed Romanoff, Lil' Band O' GoldBasement Discs, Saturday 27th March 2010 I had heard a lot about these two artists, especially Lil' Band O' Gold, but as I haven't been working that much I wasn't able to make it to any of their shows. I probably arrived a bit earlier than I needed to for Mary Gauthier, but I wanted to get a good spot before everyone started arriving. I had an early lunch to make up for it. Mary Gauthier and Ed Romanoff were great and it was good to hear her new CD. It would be hard to have such as short set as the new CD really needs to be listened to in its entirety to get the most out of the story on it. I did briefly get to talk to Mary and Ed after their set when they asked about the photos and I hope the rest of their Australian tour goes well. I had heard a lot about Lil' Band O' Gold from people who had been to New Orleans Jazz Fest and they had a big buzz going for their first tour. The closest band I could compare them to locally would be the Large Number 12s as they have a big following, but rarely play outside of New Orleans just like the Twelves only ever playing at the Pint on Punt. The band was almost an hour late from their session at RRR FM due to the combined traffic from the footy, flower and garden show and the Grand Prix, but everyone was very patient. It can be hard to justify the hype surrounding a band sometimes as overseas acts seem to get a free ride in the press while local bands cop it, but in this case I knew I had to buy Lil' Band O' Gold's CD even before the first song had finished. It was such a great set, it is a shame that I can't make it to their gigs and I am sure everyone seeing them at the Apollo Bay Music Festival will have a good time.
