Mixmasters Records Christmas BashNorthcote Social Club Sunday, 3rd December 2006 with the Large No. 12's, Bay of Pigs, The Yearlings, Suzannah Espie & the Last Word After the spectacular success of this year's Melbourne BBQ Day I thought this would be the perfect way to wind down for the day so I was ready to walk from Ceres to Northcote. Thanks to Pommy Kev and friends for letting me share their cab so I didn't have to. Having an after party for BBQ day is a great idea as there are always some people who don't want to go straight home. I am sure if it goes ahead next year it will get a lot more people as even BBQ day needed to couple of years to warm up. As they had their residency to get to at the Pint on Punt, Wes and Horse from the Large No. 12's went on first to an appreciative early crowd. From all accounts their set with the rest of their band at the Pint on Punt was a ball-tearer as they had warmed up from this gig. Bay of Pigs were up next and were just as good as when I saw them at Queenscliff. Pumpy still had energy to burn after his powerhouse performance at BBQ day and Big Kev was great also. After I quick dinner I was just in time to catch the start of the Yearlings and they were as great as I remember them from Marcel Borrack's CD launch. I don't know why I haven't purchased their CD yet as I have titles by all the other artists that played this gig. Ending the night perfectly was Suzannah Espie and the Last Word. Big Boy Lemonade was on his best behaviour this time and did not make faces at me while he was meant to be playing. They were great and I will try to catch at least their second set when they play at the Greyhound Hotel next week. It was a great gig and I am looking forward to seeing the bands involved playing around town when I have the chance. |
