Melbourne Locked Out Protest
Treasury Gardens/Parliament House steps, Friday 30th May 2008
Most of my friends are either musicians or work in hospitality, so the new 2am lockout trial would directly effect them and I wanted to support them as a lot of them couldn't make it themselves.
I am working near where the protest started so I had less of an excuse to skip it and I did try and get more people to come. As it turned out, I ended up going by myself, but I did see a few people I knew in the crowd.
As I don't have any experience with protests to judge it against, I'd say there ended up being a couple of thousand people who walked up to Parliament House and then listened to the Greens candidate for Lord Mayor, the protest organiser and one of the promoters who has been fighting the ruling in VCAT. It is only the start of the campaign, so hopefully more people turn up next time.
