New Year's Eve Summer Soul Shakedown
with Continental Robert, Andy Baylor and the Caravan of Soul Orchestra, Tracey Miller and the Soulettes, DJ Johnny Topper
I had know about this gig for a while, but was originally planning just to go to my local and have an early night due to not having any money this time of year.
Only during the week I was offered the chance to come to the gig and decided to take it as I thought it might be good to do something different for once and I could always go back to the pub next year.
I had not been to the Caravan Music Club before and I ended up eating in the green room with the band members due to it being a full house. I did get some photos of the audience and Johnny Topper DJing, but mostly I just sat down the end of the table and listened to everyone else.
It was great to see Andy Baylor leading a big band as I had only seen him play with Sarah Carroll or with the Fireside Bellows before.
I had a chat to Tracey Miller and the Soulettes in the band room and I thought they sang great in the first set and also with Continental Robert.
Continental Robert played in the second set and also did the countdown at midnight, which was great. I also liked the staged confrontation with Tracey Miller and him going off the stage with a cape ala James Brown at the end.
It was a great first gig at the new venue and I look forward to seeing the Pirates of Beer there in a couple of weeks time. Thanks to Peter Foley for inviting me, the bands, the Caravan Music crew and Andy Baylor for giving me a lift back to Caulfield afterwards.
