Queenscliff Music Festival 2006
Friday, 24th November, 2005
I saw the following performers on Friday night:
Dallas Frasca, Rebecca Barnard, Portentia, Mick Thomas & The Sure Thing, Unconscious Brothers, Anne McCue, Chris Wilson, Yann Tiersen, Blaze
From last year I knew I would have to wait about an hour or so before the gates opened so I just ended up wandering around the street and stopping in at the Vic for the one. At least it wasn't as hot as last year. Thanks to Aunty Aileen for picking me up from the train, letting me stay at her house, lending me a backpack and dropping me off at the bus stop also.
From their performance on JVG's show last week and what I could hear from their warmup, I knew Dallas Frasca would be great and they didn't disappoint. I also recognised Billy Bob who used to play with the Red Hot Poker Dots on account of his amp. I ended up buying her EP afterwards as I have a friend who is really into that style of music.
I thought I may as well go over to the friends function as I had a 'friends of the festival' ticket, but it was too crowded so I just stayed for a couple of minutes and went back over to wait for Rebecca Barnard. I saw Rebecca Barnard playing at the 'live at night' concert during the Royal Melbourne Show a few months ago so it was good to see her again.
As I hadn't seen any acts in there last year, I poked my head in the 'Foot in the Door' stage for a couple of songs and saw a young jazz/fusion act named Portentia who I am sure will go well once they get some more gigs.
I hadn't seen Mick Thomas & The Sure Thing since the fundraiser for RRR FM moving studios a couple of years ago so it was great to see them again. I know a lot of people were looking forward to the Weddings Parties Anything show on the Saturday night, but I liked this performance also and even bought a CD after the gig (have been meaning to for a while.)
Since I saw the Unconscious Brothers brothers playing at the Victoria Market earlier this year I have been a bit busy, but it was good to catch up with them again with a local crowd behind them. Special guests for their set included Sarah Carroll, Rebecca Barnard and Anne McCue. Also during their set I got a SMS from Ilana saying she was coming down to the festival the next day with the Detonators.
Chris Wilson was also great, but I had trouble with people grabbing me and trying to move me out of the way while he was playing. What!? I am sure it had nothing to do with my large green 'press' hat! I try to take photos off to the side, but there were big signs sticking up at the sides of the stage in the Pelican Bar so you couldn't get there.
Not knowing Yann Tiersen from a bar of soap, I didn't know what to expect so I was surprised to see he got such a great reaction, but people even cheered a piano accordian during this set, so make of it what you will. A lot of it had to do with him being a 'Suxy Frunch Mun' who could easily get away with singing lyrics such as "when will we fuck again" and have the ladies in a puddle on the floor.
Strangely compatible with Yann Tiersen was the performance of the Blaze fire-twirlers outside while they were playing. I am sure if they were allowed to, they would have gone inside the tent and twirled in time to the music. Thanks to Donna for her email as I was never able to find Blaze's website last year so I could show them last year's photos.
On the bus home I also ended up talking to the bus driver who was a big music fan, but couldn't make it to the festival this time. It turned out he was the same driver I had last year!
