Suzannah Espie & The Last Word CD Launch
with Marcel Borrack, The Yearling and special guests
The Corner Hotel
Sunday, 2nd October, 2005
I had been looking forward to this gig for weeks and also finally getting my friend to come out to something as I wanted to see her again. As is usual for these gigs I arrived early and got to talk to some people (thanks Cookie) who I remember seeing from GIT's residencies around Melbourne.
Suzannah Espie & the Last Word has been playing around Melbourne since the beginning of last year and I have tried to see them when I had the chance. I was really looking forward to hearing Suzannah's new CD as I am a big fan of GIT and I wanted to see how it would turn out.
It was also great to see Sophie Best who was the DJ for the night as I hadn't seen her since GIT had their last EP launch. I really enjoyed the songs she played in between bands as they were different to the usual DJ set and reminded me of the Twang radio show.
I had heard about Marcel Borrack, but I don't remember seeing him before. I still enjoyed his set though and went over to the merchandise stand and talked to Jules near the end of his set.
The Yearlings played next and were really well received by the crowd. One of the members of this group used to play with a band called Problem Pony who played with GIT a few times around Melbourne.
While the whole night was special, my favourite moment of the night was when Suzannah Espie started her first song. I don't know how it happened, but I was thinking the same thing as Suzannah was signing and on top of that I turned around and found my friend standing right behind me which made me really happy.
Special guests for the night were "The Wordettes" who included Sarah Carroll, Lil' Fi and Kerri Simpson and they were really great. I haven't seen Lil' Fi since last year so it was good to see her performing in support for Suzannah on the night.
The rest of Suzannah's set was really great and I have heard from a few people already saying that they really enjoyed the songs on the new CD. I left fairly soon after the show ended, but I did get to talk to JVG and a couple of other people. My friend ended up going to her radio show and was still on air at 2am in the morning as I found out in an SMS later.
I am going to get the CD "A Few More Days" next week and I recommend going to see Suzannah Espie and the Last Word if you get the chance.
