Vampora, HMAS Vendetta, BarbariönThe Tote, Saturday 2nd April 2009 It's been a long time since I went to a gig where I didn't know at least one of the bands first, but I read the mail out from the Tote band booker and looked at the video on Barbariön's Myspace and just had to come along to have a look. I had enjoyed Austrian Death Machine's "Total Brutal", which is actually a good album with some great music if you look past the ARNHOLD gimmick, so I was interesting to see some harder music for a change. As usual with the first band of the night, the room was a bit quiet for Vampora, but I thought they went great and I will look out for them in the future. HMAS Vendetta class themselves as "Australiana Powermetal" and have the historical costumes to go along with it. They also seem to have a good following already as people were singing along to some of their songs including "Boganheart". I didn't know if Barbariön were being serious or not by just looking at their website. They reminded me of a metal version of the Twits in that they may have the costumes and pyrotechnics, but they play the music seriously. As they say themselves, they don't simply play songs, but go into battle for each track. The pyrotechnics were great and I had to get out of the way quick smart for the one that guitarist had. By the end of their show you could tell they had won over the crowd due to all the people wanting to whack them on the back in congratulations as they walked off stage. It was a great night and I will recommend the bands to other people I know so they can go see them and hopefully my friends in bands will play some gigs with them.
