Town Bikes Cook Off

Tote Kitchen Stadium
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Sunday, 31st July 2005

Nearly a decade ago, a man's fantasy became reality in a form never seen before, Tote Kitchen Stadium, a giant cooking arena. The motivation for spending his fortune to create kitchen stadium was to encounter new, original cuisine, which could be called true, artistic creations. To realize his dream, he started choosing the top chefs of various styles of cooking, and he named his men the Iron Chefs, the invincible men of rock culinary skill. Iron Chef Japanese is Masaharu Morimoto, Iron Chef French is Hiroyuki Sakai, Iron Chef Chinese is Chen Kenichi, and Masahiko Kobe is Iron Chef Italian. Kitchen stadium is the arena where Iron Chefs await the challenges of master chefs from all over the world. Both the Iron Chef and challenger have thirty minutes to tackle the theme ingredient of the day. Using all their senses, skills, creativity, they're to prepare artistic dishes never tasted before. And if ever a challenger wins over the Iron Chefs, He or she will gain the people's ovation, and fame forever. Every battle, reputations are on the line in Tote Kitchen Stadium, where master chefs pit their artistic creations against each other. What inspiration will today's challenger bring, and how will the Iron Chefs fight back? The heat will be on!

Allez Cuisine!

In a sensational break from tradition, Chairman Wu has decided to enter the arena for a solo cooking challenge over 30 minutes with the theme ingredient of marshmallows. With his assistants Carla & Gabi of the Town Bikes, he managed to prepare the following 3 dishes within the time frame:
Marshmallow Five Cup Salad
- The sweetness of the marshmallow is offset well with the texture of the coconut.

Marshmallow and Chocolate Fondue
- This party favourite can be enjoyed with a variety of fruits and other snack foods.

Marshmallow & Raspberry Cheesecake
- This dish goes well with beer and beer.

So how do you think you went today Chairman Wu?
"It was much more difficult than I thought, everyone was yelling and Glenny G kept asking me questions all the time."

Unfortunately, the Iron Chefs couldn't make it today, so the following people agreed to fill in for the challenges (I only saw the first challenge.)

Team Snag 1: Ally Spazzy, Luke Roberts & Hector
Team Snag 2: Spencer P Jones, Link & Lance Petre

Entertaining the large crowd assembled in Tote Kitchen Stadium for today's battles where DJ Holly C during the breaks and various bands including Dynamo who played during the first challenge.

After a dramatic and highly interesting battle that included the highlights of Hector cutting lines of curry powder and Ally Spazzy snorting it, problems with the gas supply on Team Snag 2's side and Link cutting himself, the two teams finished with the following dishes:

Team Snag 1:
Curried Sausages
- This dish is a favourite with dads everywhere, with the savoury flavours of the sausages being offset with the sweetness of the pineapple. Special mention must go to the beer infused rice.

Team Snag 2:
Sausage & dumplings
- The stewed dumplings and sausages where severed in a tomato sauce which served to highlight the natural flavour of the sausages.

Sausage wraps
- This unique dish demonstrates the versatility of sausages away from the BBQ.

Plain sausage with baked potato
- This dish highlights the unique nature of sausages and their important part in BBQ culture.

Next up, tasting and judgement, on the panel today are:
Janelle Johnstone
Dave Graney
Clem Bastow
Wally Meanie

The dishes were scored out of 50 with marks going to taste, teamwork, presentation, originality and another category that escapes me.

As expected, Team Snag 1 scored high in teamwork, but low in taste and originality. Even though Team Snag 2 scored low in teamwork (they all worked on their own thing), they scored highly in the other categories, leading them to be the winner of the first round and in the running for the Golden Wok and Silver Spatula at the end of the night.

At this point, I have to finish my coverage of this event as Stephen Chow was appearing at the 2005 Melbourne International Film Festival and I wanted to get there early to get a seat. I hope The Town Bikes have heaps of fun overseas and make a lot of new friends.

Thanks.
