X

with Killer Birds and Cold Harbour
Greyhound Hotel
Friday, 9th March 2007

I had been looking forward to this gig for weeks as where a lot of people as quite a few people who don't usually go out to gigs ended up coming. As usual I arrived early as I like seeing the supports and got to see the Killer Birds doing a sound check and talk to them before the show.

The Killer Birds were great and reminded me a of a younger, rockier Spazzys. It really makes a difference bringing the drums forward on the stage as it makes them sound more together and they work well on stage.

I hadn't seen Cold Harbour before, so it was surprising that a band this good has managed to fly under the radar for so long. The closest I could describe them would be rock and roll spaghetti western and they seemed to warm up over their set. It was good to see a keyboardist in a band like this as it adds something extra to their performance.

As half the original members have now passed on, the X that performed on the night is more of a tribute to them. They were really great though and they managed to break a bass and guitar string on the same song early in the set (Paddy Chong fixed them though.) Kim Volkman was great striding across the stage and kicking out and Steve Lucas has an excellent range in his voice.

Hopefully X goes well in their upcoming gigs and people complaining that it's not the real X can put that behind them and just enjoy the music.
