Chris Altman & Que Paso Farewell Show

with the Idle Hoes, Immigrant Union and guests
John Curtin Bandroom, Saturday 7th May 2011

I doesn't seem like that long ago that I first saw Que Paso at the Tote for Wash Winter's Willies Away With Whiskey and now they are having an extended break due to Alysha and Chris relocating to Canada. It was good while it lasted and I got to go to their CD launch (I still think people missed out by not going to it) and saw them play at the Caravan with Chris even doing a guest in the Melbourne BBQ Orchestra last year he had become so well known in the local scene.

Although there was a lot of things on this weekend including Dave Graney's CD launch on the same night, I wasn't going to miss this night as I knew it would be a good show and have lots of people turn up.

I hadn't seen the Idle Hoes and Immigrant Union before, but had heard about them a fair bit. The Idle Hoes have been around for years and I didn't know they were still doing regular gigs. I was surprised to see Immigrant Union on the bill for this gig as I didn't expect them to play that style of music at all. It was different to what I would usually see, but I still enjoyed it.

The Que Paso band also included for the night Jeb Cardwell, two horn players, Sarah and Suzannah on backing vocals and special guests including Barb Waters, Van Walker & Liz Stringer, the lead singer of Dirty York and Mikey Madden.

The room ended up packed and I had to stand right up the front as I couldn't move around or change sides to take photos during Que Paso. There was a lot of dancing going on up the front and I was surprised how tired my feet were by the end of the night, surely I didn't dance that much.

It was also great to see Suzannah as I hadn't seen her since she had her baby and I am looking forward to seeing little Isla soon.

I hope Chris and Alysha go well in Canada and get to borrow the Re-main's van, Curtis, to go on a road trip occasionally.
