with Luke Sinclair, Van Walker's Cracked Country Lips and special guests
Bella Union, Saturday 11th June 2011
Tracy and Matt first told me about this gig way back in April when they were supporting Tony Joe White at the Caravan so I made a note of it and didn't really plan to be doing anything else that weekend, it just sort of happened. I had enjoyed the benefit concert during the comedy festival in the same venue and always try to make it to Half Arsed Thursdays with Casey and band, but I haven't been able to make as many gigs as I would like to there.
Luke Sinclair was up first and played a good set. I hadn't really seen much of the Idle Hoes before except for the few songs they did at Que Paso's last gig, but I thought it went well.
I hadn't seen Sime Nugent's new band Sweet Jean before, I thought they went great and I will try to look out for them around town.
Van Walker's Cracked Country Lips is the closest Van Walker will get to a full band outside the Swedish Magazines as he mainly plays solo these days or with Liz Stringer. It was a really good set and really warmed up the crowd, which by that stage had packed out the venue, it took me by surprise somewhat as I hadn't expected that many people. Cheers to Van Walker for wearing the paper parasol that I bought from my drink I had at the Tiki Bar and for Liz for giving it to him.
It was really good to see Tracy McNeil playing with a full band as I am used to seeing her with just Matt Green or Jordie Lane except for special occasions. They new CD is great and I hope she comes back to Melbourne soon after her wedding in Canada.
