The Tote, Sunday 31st July 2011
I had enjoyed this day last year so I decided to schedule my film festival screenings around it and even managed to get a day off the next day at the last minute.
Chris Russell's Chicken Walk was first up for the day, I hadn't seen him play before and it was good having a the first act in the front bar as it feels a bit empty with the first acts playing out the back otherwise.
I had seen the guitar player from Danny Walsh Banned with the Toot Toot Toots earlier in the year, but hadn't managed to see the band before now. Special mention to the use of the "Sherremin" and its attached esky pre-amp.
Jack Winter (Phil from the Bower Birds) also played in the front bar and went well.
The Once Overs are also a band I had not heard before, they are different to the other bands on the bill, but went well and should be one to look out for in the future.
As is customary with all-day gigs at the Tote I went down to Smith St for dinner, by the time I got back the Hell-Toe Express was playing but it was a bit too crowded in the front bar so I didn't see that much of them.
Clinkerfield also played well this year, is it my imagination or they trying to sound more junkyard each time? There were power and sound problems at the end which forced them to finish early.
Blood Red Bird were the first band to play upstairs and went well with Angie Hart even stopping by to watch their set.
Thankfully the PA was fixed by the time Clairy Browne and the Bangin' Rackettes came on. It was my first time seeing them with Loretta Miller singing as one of the Rackettes so I was looking forward to it. This time I got to stay for their entire set as it got so crowded at the Toff when they came on I had to leave early. I am looking forward to seeing them at the Caravan Music Club now.
I was the first gig for Wally Corker's Drunk Arse Band with Cal and Van Walker and they were a bit rough, but enjoyable.
Cash Savage & The R.S.A.’s finished off the day and had a lot of girls dancing. I will try to go see them in the future.
I did try to go down to see Mikelangelo and the Tin Star afterwards, but it was already full at the Old Bar when I got there so I wasn't going to be able to see anything. Cheers to Pumpy who had to deal with all the punters coming down from the Tote. It was still a good day and I am looking forward to next year.
