with Merri Creek Pickers, Valentiine, King of the North
Prince Bandroom, Friday 13th July 2012
I had booked into this ages ago and luckily I received my tax refund that day or I wasn't sure if I was going to make it. I remember going to see the Bittersweet Kicks when they first played at the Pint on Punt with the Twits in 2006. I never actually saw the three ambulances that turned up at one of their gigs, but did see someone kicking the dunny door open. Even though they were barred from the Pint years ago (along with Spencer P Jones), they have found their new home at the Lyrebird and can even walk in wearing a Tiger head carrying someone on their back and no one will bat an eye.
The Merri Creek Pickers were a surprise as I didn't think they would fit in this line up. They are more country, but do have some rock in them. Also included in the bands are former members of the Ramblers and also Donny from the infamous 57 Pages of Pink. I will try to go see them again in the future.
I hadn't seen Valentiine since the Day by the Green earlier in the year, there were a few people there by the time they played and they got a good reaction.
King of the North were another band I hadn't seen before, but they did an excellent job of warming up the crowd and the guitar player jumped around a lot.
Funnily enough by the time the Bittersweet Kicks started I was getting a bit tired and it turns out I was actually too close to the stage for once as I went deaf after two songs and took heaps of photos as it was. I managed to stay up the back for about half their set, but decided to try and get an early night and went off to Topilinos for a nightcap as is customary. It was still a good night and I did try to say hello to everyone in the band before they played. I am happy with the photos at least and hopefully the Bittersweet Kicks have a good time on tour.
