JVG Radio Method RRR Radiothon Spectacular 2012

with Minibikes, Angie Hart, Ian Bland, Pony Face, Georgia Fields, Doubleblack, Dr Pump, Van Walker, Kerri Simpson, Steve Montgomery, Dan Warner
RRR Performance Space, Sunday 26th August 2012

Even though I had already had a big weekend with Baby et Lulu on Friday and Benny and Fly by Niters on Saturday, I was looking forward to the last day of the RRR Radiothon as it is always a good show for the JVG Radio Method and a taster of the BBQ Day show later in the year.

First up where the Minibikes with an expanded line up including Adam Simmons and Angie Hart. They even did a Hall and Oates song like a few years back, but Marcel did not wear the wig and moustache this time.

Angie Hart did a lovely song originally performed by her own band Frente, Jungle and it was good to see she dressed to match the theme.

Ian Bland's poem was funny and ended in a way you wouldn't have expected. A lot of people subscribed to the poetry segment, which is always good to see.

The currently growing in popularity Pony Face did a version of the Stooges I wanna be your dog, their CD launch will be very well attended I believe.

Georgia Fields did her fun version of "Pony" with extra explanations for the gangster parts and lacking some explaining in others, causing much amusement.

Doubleblack did a great old rockabilly type song that I forget at the moment, there would be a lot to choose from even forgetting Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

The ever-reliable Dr Pump was in fine form and it made me miss him having a full band to back him up regularly.

Van Walker and band did an excellent version of Warren Zevon's Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, thematically correct as it was set in Africa. I have to admit having to check out the original to see if it was actually Van Walker who shot Roland (he was pretty convincing.)

Kerri Simpson and Steve Montgomery from the Ska Vendors did an excellent ska type song with lots of dancing although not that much from the audience.

Finishing off the day was Dan Warner and band with the Bruce Springstreen epic "Jungleland" that they attempted to do a 15 minute version of in 11 minutes, I thought it went great. Dave certainly was relieved at the end.

It was another excellent day and hopefully the station managed to reach 11,000 subscribers for this year's Radiothon. I did bring the tiger head and stuff to dress up, but didn't get to get it out this time.

Ian Bland and the Lamington Drive Orchestra
Lomond Hotel, Sunday 26th August 2012

I had missed Ian Bland's last full band show due to being too tired, I did managed to stay for a few songs this time, but still left as I was falling asleep. It didn't really make much difference as due to tram delays it took until 8.30pm to get home.

It was still good to be able to have a sit down after the Radiothon show and talk to people, I will try to make the gig after BBQ day this year for the same reason.

There were quite a few people at the gig and hopefully they will be launching the new CD soon.
