with special guest Tim Rogers
Regal Ballroom, Thursday 29th June 2012
I had been looking forward to seeing Lil' Band O' Gold again after seeing them tour twice in the one year in 2010 and rumours of them touring in 2011 not coming to fruition. I had however heard they were working on a new album and knew it would be coming out on the Dust Devil Label as it seems Australia gets to have their albums first in a reversal of just about every other artist in the world bar ones who live in Australia.
I did originally see they were booked to play at the Espy and the Regal Ballroom, but decided on the later as I had enjoyed the Root/DC3 show there earlier in the year and didn't want to be squashed in up the front as can happen at the Gerswhin Room in the Espy. I was surprised that they have now segregated the standing room and sitting areas in that you have to have a wristband to get up the front or even at the sides. Other venues seem to manage it fine without even needing security to stand there or a the dozens of front of house staff.
Despite what other people claimed was poor sound, it didn't sound that bad to me. Thanks to Waz E James for letting me sit at their table up the front and for someone on the table getting me a seat. I got to have a dance up the front with Sarah and I thought more people would be dancing during the show. Tim Rogers complained of people acting like snobs for not dancing during his songs.
There were quite a few songs off the "Plays Fats" album, but also a lot of their old favourites and some off their last two albums. The band ended up playing for two hours without a set break, which was impressive in itself and I am sure they would have gone longer if they had been allowed. There wasn't an encore, but I thought the two songs with Tim Rogers singing with the band were good for that.
Unfortunately, I had already booked a ticket before they announced their final show at the Newport Substation on the Saturday, so I cannot make it to that. Thanks to Sarah Betts for taking me over to see Dickie Landry as I said I would say hello to him after the show.
