Featuring: Moran School of Irish Dancing, Anna’s Go-Go Academy, All in Line Dancers, Mass Mayhem Crew, Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association Lion Dance Team and the Shut Up and Dancers
Hosted by The Town Bikes with Dance Marshals - The BIRDMANN and Rena Happens
Fringe Festival Hub, Friday 12th October 2012
I had missed this night on previous years as I always seemed to have something on. It was lucky I was able to attend this year as I received the invite on the way home from a gig the night before and decided to go as I didn't have anything on that night for once.
It worked out for the best as I had been to the Jewels and Bullets gig at the same venue last year, but couldn't make the "Now and Then" gig this time around. Considering the number of photos I ended up taking it is probably for the best.
The Town Bikes were the hosts and also did some dancing themselves including two numbers where they changed costume. I thought the one where they danced without arms was funny as they kept in character so hard they had to pick the microphones off the floor with their teeth. The cat/bear costumes were also funny and used well during the dance they did as well as hosting the last part of the show.
Moran School of Irish Dancing were up first and had a lot of dancers including a kids' group. After their demonstration, they got quite a few members of the crowd up on stage to teach them some of the moves they had just performed. Some of the audience took part, but I am not sure how many.
The All in Line Dancers demonstrated their moves and explained you can do the same dance to any song. They then led the entire audience in a line dancing lesson with about six hundred people line dancing at the same time.
The BIRDMANN and Rena Happens as dance marshals were introduced and then there was a freestyle dance break, where the judges were wandering the crowd looking for dancers for the dance-off later. Everyone dancing had their own number and I would have liked to get some more photos of people dancing in the crowd, but it was hard to get far back into the crowd.
Anna's Go-Go Academy came back strong after the break with some lovely dancers doing popular 20's dances. I had to move out of the way quickly to avoid being kicked from behind during the dance lesson, everyone seemed to enjoy the dance lesson as much as the demonstration.
The Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association Lion Dance Team surprised me as I was watching the drums on stage and didn't notice the lion dancers in the crowd behind me. They spent about as much time walking through all the people as they did on the stage. It was great to have something different that I wouldn't have thought of.
The Shut Up and Dancers were a special dance group put together just for the night. I thought they were great and someone even recorded their dance I found out later. Cheers to Gabi for instructing the group in their dance moves.
The big dance-off with audience members selected by the dance marshals was a highlight. There were some really good moves by the dancers and I had to agree with the judges decision even if my favourite dancer from the group did not make the cut.
Mass Mayhem Crew were pretty energetic for it being so late in the day with lots of flips and spinning. This is one context that Skrillex is justified.
Finishing off the night was the dry synchronised swimming record attempt for North Melbourne Town Hall with the Town Bikes leading. I was surprised by the number of people who put the pegs on their noses.
It was a great night and cheers to Carla and Gabi and everyone involved. It is rare to see everyone so happy and having fun over the course of an event like this and I will try to make it next year and bring some friends along.
