with Michael Crane, the Scion Pirates, Chris Wilson, Anthony Doig, Jess Migotto, Ben John Smith, Jeanna
as part of the Williamstown Literary Festival
Friday 31st May 2013, Way Out West Roots Music Club
The Scion Pirates had done a gig down at the Piping Hot Chicken Shop with Michael Crane and Ben John Smith last year but I had missed it, so I was happy to be asked to take photos at Michael's book launch at the Way Out West club.
It was my first time at the venue and I did take the time to look at the photos in the gallery of some of the previous gigs.
The Scion Pirates don't often play up in Melbourne, so it was good to see them also. The last time I remember seeing members of the group together was when they played as the Unconscious Brothers with Guy Pearce at the 2008 Queenscliff Music Festival.
The spoken word sections were also interesting, with some of the participants doing longer pieces from upcoming books. Anthony Doig, Michael Crane and Ben John Smith also did some pieces with the band playing behind them, it was a more rock and poetry vibe than the normal beat poetry.
It was a good night and I even ended up joining the conga line at one point. I was invited back to the rest of the literary festival, but I got caught in the storm on the way home and spent the next day drying off. Hopefully the event happens again next year.
