International Independent Record Store Day 2013

Basement Discs/Off the Hip Records, Saturday 20th April 2013

I had enjoyed going to Record Store Day all day at Basement Discs last year, but was not sure how long I would last this year. I also was not certain on when it would actually start this year. As it turned out I had missed the first two acts, but the previous year I had gotten there so early I went to get breakfast in the cafe next door.

It was great to get there to see Lisa Miller and Shane O'Mara at least.

After seeing Myles and hearing he was playing at Off the Hip that afternoon I left after seeing Liz Stringer and Charles Jenkins in the hope of seeing Wrong Turn play at the store, but ended up leaving not long after the Reprobettes started as they late starting. I did get to look through the records and have a Record Store Day cupcake though.

I got back to Basement Discs to find the Eagle and the Worm packing up and what looked like a big crowd who had been there to see them. Mikelangelo and Dave Graney had taken over MC duties, providing much amusement to the customers.

Mikelangelo and the Tin Star with Saint Clare played a great set and they even did a new song. I enjoyed Mikelangelo's exercises after he played and ended up being kissed on both cheeks by him after answering a question correctly in the quiz.

The final act I saw on the day was Suzannah Espie and Ian Collard, which I also enjoyed. I know the Mercurials and Dan Waters were playing also, but I wanted to go see Tinpan Orange that night and to walk down to see them so I did not stay for the rest of the day. It was still a great day and hopefully people bought a lot of music.
