MC Mikelangelo
Corner Hotel, Sunday 3rd March 2013
I was not sure I was going to make this show originally, but it was for a good cause and the line up was really good so I decided to make an effort and make it. There were a lot of other gigs on that day and I was glad I did make it as I turned out to be the only photographer, pretty strange for a gig at the Corner these days.
Due to also appearing on JVG's show that afternoon at the outside broadcast at the Retreat Hotel, Suzannah Espie had to be moved up in the bill. I did not mind as I made sure I got there early.
Blind Kiwi & His Cigar Box Guitar did a few songs demonstrating a couple of his guitars and there was also one in the silent auction.
On MC duties for the day was Mikelangelo who ended up talking to me from the stage as no one wanted to come up the front.
Kim Volkman performed an interesting all improvised set and as Mikelangelo said it would get better if it were longer, but 20 minutes was all he could do on the day.
Krista Polvere also did some nice songs and I will look out for her in the future.
Charles Jenkins went well and also ended up taking some requests from Karen. There was also some dancing during his set.
There were raffle draws for the lucky door prize and raffle ticket sales throughout the day. I was lucky enough to win the prize from Basement Discs. The last time I won something in a raffle was 2007.
Sherry Rich and Rick Plant performed some songs off Sherry's album from last year that went well.
Kerri Simpson and Shannon Bourne also did some great songs, I will have to buy her CD as I have been meaning to.
Mikelangelo and Qunicy McLean with members from Blue Ruin did a split set and sang a couple of songs at the end together.
After talking about it all day, Mikelangelo also got to do a live auction of one of the raffle prizes one of the winners had offered back to raise more money.
To finish off the day the Darling Downs played some songs off their new album. Some people wanted them to continue, but the venue was only reserved for a certain number of hours so maybe next time.
It was a great day and hopefully raised a lot of money for the cause. The silent auction is still running to the 30th of March if you would like to contact Karen Conrad and put in a bid on the items.
