Barbarion farewell to Frankie 03/05/14

with Fuck the Fitzroy Doom Scene, Pterodactyl
The Tote, Saturday 3rd May 2014

I had booked this a while ago as I have always enjoyed going to see Barbarion and was sad that Frankie was leaving as he would always pose for a silly photo eating a leg or lamb or an entire roast chicken. I even remember talking to him at 2am in the morning outside the HiFi Bar when they were bumping out one night. I did have birthday drinks to go to that afternoon so I came straight from there.

First up was a new band called Fuck the Fitzroy Doom Scene who were more of a traditional rock band and played well I thought. They had another gig on so did not stick around.

Pterodactyl are interesting as there are not really any other technical guitar metal bands around at least in the local scene. Most of their set was instrumental and the act emphasizes the guitar work.

Even though it is good to go see bands at the Tote, when it sells out it can get a bit difficult as people push in front of you even if you are already near the front. Turned out to be for the best as the pyro made things a bit too warm up the front this time.

Barbarion have always been more of a live act than a recorded one, what makes them special does not really come through on their recorded work. The audience really got into it doing the metal horns and singing along in some songs. One of the lead singers came out into the audience and bashed me with his belly. It was good to have seen them and I hope Frankie goes well in whatever he decides to do.
