Jennifer Kingwell in Kate Bush's Hounds of Love
Melbourne Fringe Festival 2014
Lithuanian Club, Saturday 20th September 2014
I had enjoyed the other nights of a single musician's songs during the comedy festival for charity over the year and more recently the Bob Dylan festival with a lot of people I know singing, so I was looking forward to this one. There was a night of Kate Bush songs a few years back for a different festival, but I wasn't able to make it to this one.
Having the show staged as a theatrical production suits the music and from the audience members I heard talking about it they wanted to see a show that treated the music seriously. Kate Bush's fans are intense and it would have been very scary to even consider putting on this show and to do one of her biggest albums is even a bigger challenge.
I hadn't heard of the artist before the show, but was willing to take a punt on it as they were confident enough to mount the production plus they had another show in the Fringe Festival.
It turned out to be a really great show and I do know quite a few of the songs from the album, even the second half came up well and the encore provided the opportunity to do Wuthering Heights. I also enjoyed the dancing and the parts with the umbrellas. Even the squeaky scenery being raised was endearing. I did get to say hello to Ms Kingwell after the show as I had been trying to get her permission to photograph, it turned out OK though and I will try to go to see her again in the future.
