Kew Callout No. 4

with MC Brian Nankervis, Charles Jenkins, the Killjoys, Suzannah Espie and the Last Word
Kew RSL, Sunday 22nd May 2016

I had heard about this series of gigs and wanted to contribute, but had not worked for some time plus there were only a limited amount of media tickets so I had to pass on the other gigs. Luckily Big Boy Lemonade (Andrew Ogburn) invited me along to this one as it was going to be his last one playing with Suzannah before he went overseas. Also he made the entry donation for me.

I had been past the venue before but had never been inside. There are some rennovations going on out the back. It did fill up fairly quickly but for this day most of the tables were taken out so more people could stand near the front.

MC for the day was Brian Nankervis who was great as always. There was a three part quiz and also a raffle draw at the end of the day.

Charles Jenkins played first and was a bit cranky at first due to everyone talking up the back, but warmed up and played quite well I thought.

The Killjoys were the big draw for the day and had members playing with them who had not played with the band since the 90s. They did play all their own songs but people did not seem to mind. I enjoy Anna's newsletters especially the ones where she does not mention the band and will have to go see the trio soon.

Some people left after the Killjoys but I didn't mind as it was not as crowded. Dave Foley played in the Killjoys and Suzannah's bands on drums without much of a break and was front and centre on stage but Suzannah still did most of the talking. Due to the band starting a bit late they went overtime and even had a few people get up for the last song to sing backing.

It was a great day and the five gigs raised lots of money for the Tidd/Foley families and it proves people in the Melbourne music scene will help each other out when it is needed.
