with Destrends, I Spit On Your Gravy, Aberration, The Dukes of Deliciousness, The Poppin Mommas
The Tote, Friday 1st July 2016
It had been ten years since Robbie Rocket's passing and I had heard rumours of I Spit on Your Gravy or the Brady Bunch Lawmower Massacre doing another show but did not think anything would come of it as these things are harder to organise than talk about. When it was finally announced that that I Spit on Your Gravy was going to do a gig I was surprised as it means it would meant I had seen nearly all of the bands Fred Negro had been in. I did not go to see them back in 2000 when they played their last gig as I was not going out to see gigs back then.
After the tribute gig I sent off an album with the photos from the gig to the Watts family and ended up getting to know them a lot better. I even stayed down in Geelong one year when I went down to the Queenscliff Music Festival. Billy Watts got in touch with me when the 10th anniversary gig was being planned and asked if I could take photos and I was happy to attend.
I was concerned that I was not going to be working by the time the gig was on, but luckily I had been working recently so that was one less thing to worry about.
The Poppin' Mommas were up first and it was good to see them as I had not seen them play since the Monster Sessions gig at the Espy back in 2011. The band said it might be ones of their last gigs in Melbourne and the lead singer had to go off stage for a rest during the set. They still went OK though.
In between bands I went out to the beer garden and into the front bar to talk to many people I knew as it was a very social gig. I had not seen some of the guests in years and I am sure much merriment continued throughout the night.
I had heard of the Dukes of Deliciousness but had not seen them. They went pretty good and Billy got to play in two bands on the night.
I Spit on Your Gravy were offered the headline spot but said they were too old and would rather play earlier. I tried to get up the front to get some good photos but ended up having to retreat to the beer garden due to the audience getting a bit too boisterous. It was still great to have finally seen the band I had heard so much about from the old days.
Even though it was getting pretty late by the time Destrends came on I still wanted to stay for the first few songs. I thought I could make it longer but I had not been out that long for a while. They still had a dedicated group of people up the front and hopefully I will get to see them play a full set for their album launch in the future.
It was an excellent gig and there was one more "last" gig by the band a couple of days after but I managed to get sick from going out just that night. Word on the street is that the band had too good a time to just leave it there so hopefully they will play again in the future.
