International Independent Record Store Day 2016

Basement Discs/Northside Records, Saturday 16th April 2016

I had gotten up earlier to go shopping and changed my washing day so I could make it to the Record Store Day activities, but still ended up being a bit late so I missed seeing the first act at Basement Discs. I also decided to go see Sex on Toast at Northside Records so I wasn't able to stay there the whole day like usual. I got annoyed at one of the bands holding up the other acts at Off the Hip last year so I did not go.

Alyce Platt was already playing when I arrived and she sounded great. I would try and go see her if she was playing locally.

I won a prize in the music raffle between bands from MC Brian Nankervis. The first time I have won something.

Sean McMahon and the Moonmen played next, which was great as I was not able to make their show that night.

I did get to see the first couple of songs by Russell Morris before leaving to go to Northside Records.

The trams were a bit delayed but I arrived in time to watch Deep Street Soul through the window and say hello to the lead singer of Sex on Toast.

To my surprised I ended up buying an LP in the store as a birthday present for my Go-Go teacher, Michael Jackson's soundtrack to the movie Ben.

Was very crowded by the time Sex on Toast played and the lead singer had to sing on top of the counter to be seen better. It wasn't the full band in the shop but still sounded great, especially the vocoder solo. I was also glad to have made this show since I was not able to make the residency for this band the month before or their EP launch shows.

While it was good to go to a different venue for Record Store Day, I will see how I go next year. I know a lot of people went to Greville St Records this year but I did not want to end up watching from outside for most of the day. I can really only go to one venue as I do not have a car.
