Liz Stringer at the Thornbury Theatre 18/03/23
Thornbury Theatre, Saturday 18th March 2023
I hadn't seen Liz since Out on the Weekend in 2021 and had not seen William Crighton before despite him having three albums out already.
The two artists had met while Liz was on tour with Midnight Oil. I had not managed to make it to see any of their shows as I stuffed up in 2017 with a ticket for the Albury show and then could not book accommodation and did not want to make that mistake again so passed on the other shows that were at festivals or "Out on the Green" type settings. I have seen Rob Hirst and Peter Garret play in other bands so I am happy with that. I really wanted to see Liz play by herself and not supporting some other band.
It was the hottest part of the day when I went out and I was almost going to have to get the train out to Werribee and wait for it to come back. Luckily the temperature dropped 10 degrees in half an hour by the time I got to Welcome to Thornbury for dinner but it was still stinking hot when I went to Arcade Garage out the back and watched the Taliban rescue Rambo in the RAMBO game.
Doors were a lot earlier than the last show I was at the venue for and seating was at the back, which meant I only went back to sit down when my leg was sore as I could not see anything.
William Crighton went first and seems to have his own loyal audience who was looking forward to particular songs. He does remind me of my brother in law somewhat or at least one of the performers who played at my sister's wedding on the back of a truck. Very earnest but still good, I would buy his stuff on Bandcamp when I remember it.
Seemed like a lot more people went up the front when Liz Stringer started. New line up for her band from when I last saw her and there were some songs she did not do this show despite people asking for them as she only had the one set so wanted to get through the bigger ones. I was going to leave early but ended up staying to the end and seeing Liz and William doing the song they released together the cover of a Midnight Oil song.
I did see Suzannah and Jack on the way out (Suzannah thought my hat was hilarious) and got an apology from Liz after from her not saying hello. It was a bit too busy for that and I would have had to stay for ages after to see her. There were no trams coming from or going to the city so I ended up walking to the train as I have to go through Flinders Street Station anyway. Maybe next time I just do that as the tram takes ages longer.
