Slim Whittle's Country Killed at the GreyhoundSunday, 30th April, 2006
"Taking the 'O' out of 'COUNTRY'!" It's been over three years since I last saw Slim Whittle (playing before GIT at the Old Colonial) and though I know exactly what I have been doing since them, it still doesn't seem that long ago. Dave Moll kept asking me if I was coming to this gig every time I went to the Greyhound so I had to go.
Slim Whittle has a big following due to his sense of humour and also that he can write political
songs without looking like a knob head. Some favourites included "My old man's an Iraqi",
"Oh what a Jihad we had" and "The clouds of Chernobyl" which went as follows: Also of note was the banter between songs and as Slim himself pointed out, who needs to go to a comedy festival show if you've got him (just as well as I can't afford it this year.) A serious note for the night was provided by "Lost blokes club" as everyone would know someone who would qualify for such a club. This song proved so popular on the night that it was played twice for those who missed it earlier. It was a very good night and it was good to see Slim and his band again after such a long absence. I will be keeping an eye out for when he is playing next and will try to get to see him before 2009. |
