Ross Wilson presents "Living In The Land of Oz"

I had originally planned to go to the Share the Spirit concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl but changed my mind when I heard the weather was going to be bad. I wasn't originally considering it until Mick Thomas was added to the bill and then had to wait for the results of a COVID19 test due to a sore throat from the previous weekend. As I was going out on the Monday night also I stayed at home the weekend before.

Not having been to this venue before I ended up changing trains at North Melbourne and ended up getting to Newmarket station about an hour early so I went to have lunch before the show.

Arriving at the venue we found out that the show had been moved inside due to the weather and I did not know the reason why the band was only arriving late.

It was a seated gig with general admission also but luckily I was assigned one of the front tables (I think they may have recognised my name).

First up was Jessie Lloyd doing some songs from the Mission Songs project and a preview of one of the songs from the new Islander songs project. Acknowledging that it was an emotional day for a lot of people, Jessie sang a song about her father and still had an extra song after getting overwhelmed. I thought she handled it well. I did tear up watching Uncle Jack Charles giving Uncle Archie Roach a possum skin cloak on the replay of the Share the Spirit concert later that night.

This was the first time I had seen Mick Thomas in person for quite a while. I didn't make it to the Christmas or New Year's Day shows but I have enjoyed Mick's releases during lockdown. I usually end up getting everything he releases which is much easier these days with Bandcamp. The song Australian Flag Bikini made an appearance especially for the day.

I had only ever seen Ross Wilson once before at the Caravan Music Club and was interested to hear what songs he would do from the Living in the Land of Oz album. It is 50 years since Daddy Cool formed and there will be more celebrations for it later in the year. I liked the Mondo Rock songs more live myself as I had not heard any of them played in person before.

I didn't stick around for the encore, but ended up having to come back to get my umbrella after leaving it under the table. Wanted to go to Laksa King but ended up at Laksa King Kitchen as it was too long to wait for the former. Maybe should not have had so much for lunch as it had to leave have the laksa (full of trash noodles and bean shoots).

Not sure if I will go to anything next year, the Invasion Day protest looks like something I would like to go to at least once.
