Ross from Boxwars told me about this gig when I saw him at the Community Cup so a couple of months ago. It wasn't 100% that it was going ahead but I made sure I did not have anything else on at least. I was impressed by the fit-out with the cardboard amps and Ross seemed to have forgotten what he told me about this gig when he said there would be a "surprise" and I already knew. Don't tell me if you really want it to be a surprise.

I went to Welcome to Thornbury to finally try out something other than Woking Amazing only to find there are no more food trucks there, boo. It was still a bit too cold to be hanging around outside there.

Arriving at the venue to find the band already started I thought I had missed something, only to find they were just doing their sound check. Also I did not know it was Bob who said hello to me as I had not seen him in "a couple" of years where turned out to be 11 and it was in Sydney I last saw him.

As a treat it turned out to be the first gig in public of Salmon Sisters who include Bob's daughter Deliah on the drums. As such it was a family and friends' gig and all the kids had to get kicked out straight after. They seemed to be very excited and shared some of my photos on their Instagram as soon as I sent them through.

I had not seen the Dilemmas before either and they turned out to be great. Special mention must go to the lead singer coming out with blood running off her head and doing a full arched back on the floor while singing and not spilling her pint. I know Ross and one of the other photographers at the gig went to see them at the Old Bar recently so they picked up a lot of fans.

Cheeky B reminded me a bit of Sweet Talk but they seem to be more 1970s-inspired rock but with less theatrics. I did recommend them to someone else I thought might like them.

The Hybernators seem to have some new songs including one for when Boxwars turned up and people bulled the cardboard speakers off the walls and started hitting each other with the cardboard guitars inside. Due to the smoke machine and not wanting to get wrecked I retreated up the back of the venue.

I did originally want to stay for all of Bob Log III but when someone tripped on a carboard speaker that had just been thrown in the hallway and spilled an entire pint down my leg I had enough. I did see the 8ft long cardboard guitar going into the crowd up the front but had no desire to actually be in the middle of it. Leg seems to be much better these days did not need to sit down for the entire night of shooting. I will see how I go at the Corner Hotel gig and other ones coming up.
