with Sally Seltmann
Corner Hotel, Saturday 6th May 2023
I booked this ages ago as I was not going to miss it again after dilly-dallying for the Brunswick Ballroom show and not getting to go. I know Fenn Wilson's album launch was on the same night but if he wanted me to come he would have told me months ago. If I book something in advance I am not changing it. People still are advertising things only two weeks before even though I have to plan much further in advance these days.
Due to an electrical fault doors were not for almost an hour after they said they would open, Sally Seltmann had already started when I got inside and I had to run to the front to get my three songs in for photos. It had been quite a while since I saw her at the Corner when she was headlining back in 2010 or so. People would not shut up during the set, I wish they would have just turned up later rather than talk, so rude!
It had been quite a while since I saw Angie Hart at this venue, 2007 was when they did the Circus Pie Charity event with one of the Masterchef judges (before he was on that show) and Ron Peno wearing a chef's hat. I sort of know Angie enough to say hello around town when she is doing RRR things like BBQ Day and the like. I have booked the Mother's Day show she will be in after missing it last year due to COVID and not going the previous year due to work. I did get to see Angie do two songs at the Punters Club Reunion which is where I think I hurt the nerve in my hip from standing on cold hard concrete for 2 days in a row.
I wasn't around in the 1990s when Frente first played around town but I knew of them through the Late Show and Angie did do a spot on the podcast about the Late Show a while back. I won a triple pack of CDs from doing a Bargarse impersonation on that podcast. I did see Frente at Queenscliff Music Festival in 2011 and got the remastered edition of the album from Basement Discs when it was still open in the city.
Since the audience was in a boisterous mood it almost seemed to be a karaoke show where the band was there but they weren't really the ones singing. Simon found out to his chagrin when someone sang the line he did not want to. If you had not said anything you could have just ignored it. Still funny though. Thanks to 'SOS' for getting me a seat (I organised it in advance this time) and management for the photo pass and approving the photos. This was at least better than going to see TISM last year as I could sit down and was not in actual pain during their show.
I can say I saw the band now and it is a sign of a good show when I don't want to rush for the train home, even went to Mr Hollywood next to the steps of Richmond station which I had not done since the Disco Machine gig a couple of years ago. I did not mind having to get off at Newport to go to the dunny and get home really late either for once, wasn't doing anything else that weekend.
