Estonian House, Saturday 13th May 2023

I had already booked the Mother's Day show after missing it the previous year and this one came up. Due to wanting to go see Watty Thompson before and not getting the chance I decided to go for as much of the day I could manage.

Turns out I arrived just as the doors opened and had to wait for the pie warmer to warm up. Lucky I found a seat close to near the front but I moved later.

Quite a few of the bands I had not seen before and it had been many decades since I had participated in a bush dance.

There were a few people I knew there but also a lot of people I did not since a lot of Watty Thompson's friends came down including some from interstate.

I did get a lot of photos and a video of the bush dance but wasn't able to participate this time due to my leg. Maybe next time.

The rest of the bands were fine, but Zig Zag seemed a bit out of place to the other ones but people did not seem to mind. I definitely would not have seen them otherwise.

The main event was a big show as they had spent two days building a shack on stage and ended up having about 20 people in the band. As it had been a long day and I had the Mother's Day show the next day I ended up leaving a bit early. It was still pretty fun but maybe next time I would not come so early as a lot of people turned up later in the afternoon and still seemed to be enjoying themselves. Definitely turn up in time for the bush dance if anyone wants to come to one of these this time.

Was a great event and well run considering they had to run it all themselves. The lighting turned out to be better than some places that have expensive systems and they also had the theatrics with the puppet "George" having his skits in between songs. Watty Thompson does subvert expectations singing as he does about not being able to express feelings and dealing with negative self-talk. Hopefully they get to do it again in the future and more people enjoy his music.
