Junes at the Lomond Hotel 19/01/24

with Gleny Rae Virus & Billy Black, The Tin Stars
The Lomond Hotel, Friday 19th January 2024

I had found out the Junes were playing when I was down at Sarah's in September last year to see the Tides of Welcome 20th anniversary and told to keep a weekend in January free. Not that much trouble as I wanted some time off anyway. There was a gig on the previous night but I could not make it as I had to work. As it turns out it was the last day at that job that I had thought was going to go for another six months so it was going to be a big one.

Having had the framed photo of the topless Gleny with her accordion stored in my room for four years and one of Suzannah that had still not been unwrapped I was determined to present them to the band when they were all in the one place. As a special bonus my parents had found the photo of GIT I had in a silver frame at my old place for fifteen years which I gave to Sarah. That did not end up happening until after the show so was quite late and I did not get a photo of the handover of all things my camera was already packed up.

Was a bunch of people I had not seen since the last time the Junes played and some even longer than that. Someone out the back ended up wandering in for the gig even though they said they were not staying, must have changed their mind then. If even the publican sits down to watch the gig on the side table you know it was a good show.

Opening the night was Gleny Rare and Billy Black who have been travelling around the place including down to Tassie to make the most of Gleny's time off. Many funny stories including Gleny talking about Shannon Noll (maybe that was during the Junes?)

First gig in Melbourne for the Tin Stars with Sarah Carroll on drums and Susan and Narelle being the lead singers. I hope to get to see them again as Susan is no longer on social media and I don't get to hear from her otherwise.

The Junes sure put on a show and played an extra-long set. Of course people would know all the songs they have not released an album for a while so people know all the songs. I would not have stayed so long for anyone else as I usually end up bailing by either the first set break or before 11.30pm at the latest due to it taking so long to get home from there. It was worth it for this time and getting home at 3am and not getting asleep until 4am just meant I did not do anything the next day. Stil worth it though.
