with MC John McAuslan, The Band Who Knew Too Much, Barb Waters, Eric Purdy, Ian Bland, Suzannah Espie and band, Dan & Dave
Lomond Hotel, Saturday 18th May 2024
I booked this while I still had money as I was determined not to leave after just one act like last time. Not to say that I still did not end up leaving early but had enough by that stage.
My plans to get something to eat before were scuttled by a delayed train so I just ended up having dinner during the Band Who Knew Too Much's set as I could hear what they were doing from the other room and did not need to actually see it to know Dave was walking on the tables. I tried standing but my leg was playing up, went and sat in Bruce's chair and he actually moved, I was expecting him to tell me to piss off he is usually not quiet about stuff like that.
Was a bunch of rough old heads there, some people even travelled from interstate. Even Cookie made an appearance which is going back.
Barb Waters and band were great, a heap of songs I had not heard of hers before and some really old ones. I do remember seeing Barb Waters and Cyndi Boste do gigs together back in the day and the Rosa Duet gig earlier in the year is still one of the best in several years.
The funniest thing about Eric Purdy was Suzannah's facial expressions behind him when he was doing his stuff. He had a go at least. Ian Bland did get to do a couple of poems including the footy one and one that was more in theme with the Lomond's anniversary. I have been to his gig there when I was the only person there, he does seem to do shows when everywhere is somewhere else or nobody wants it but has not done one I have been to for several years. If I was closer I would go to the Writer's Block event but as it is during the week I cannot at the moment.
Always great to see Suzannah playing with a full band doing her own songs. No playing on the drums this time but that was special treat at the last gig. At least everyone actually saw her this time and did not turn up at the time they thought she would be on only to have the set almost finished.
I did tell Dan and Dave I would try not to rush off but it had been a long day and a long gig. I was not really drinking but it still cost me money to buy drinks and I wasn't up for sneaking a bottle of Coke in after James pinged me that time. He was upstairs sick this time but people were still waving to the camera for him. Due to not wanting to be up too late I ended up just going on the tram and waiting. I could hear Dan singing "Fidel Castro and his beard" on the tram.
Not sure there will be a 50th anniversary of if indeed even I will be around that long. Was great to go to this one and most likely I will be not going to as many gigs this year even with a job with my rostered hours including the weekends and early/late shifts now.
